Do you believe me if I say, Lahad Datu and Tawau will be the next big thing in Sabah ? Because, Indonesia is moving it's capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan, Borneo.  As you know, Tawau is the third-largest town in Sabah. It is located on the South East Coast of the state in the administrative centre of Tawau Division which bordered by the Sulu Sea to the east, the Celebes Sea to the south at Cowie Bay and shares a border with North Kalimantan.

MALIAU BASIN

If you love nature and untouched jungle, Maliau Basin is a place for you. To enter Maliau Basin, you need to apply for permission prior 6-12 months before your trip. Pay for longer trips, so you can visit 7 tiers of Maliau falls and other Waterfalls.

Less than 10,000 human population ever entered this conservative area (a size of almost whole Singapore country). Be one of the lucky person ! 

SIPADAN ISLAND

The Sipadan Island is a famous dive spot in Sabah. It is formed by a deep-sea island. The under-water part of the island is shaped like a chimney reaching the sky from the seabed. There are over 3,000 varieties of fishes, and hundreds of types of corals in this area. It is also noted for number of green turtles and hawksbill turtles living here. Divers should not miss the sea caves here filled with colorful coral and special fishes. In the turtle caves in the northern Sipadan island, you can find a stock of silver hypostomus punctatus, the soldier fish and the flowfish.

TECK GUAN COCOA MUSEUM

Trace the delicious history of cocoa with a ticket to the Teck Guan Cocoa Museum in Tawau. Begins your tour by watching a 15 minutes' video to introduce the cocoa development of Tawau. Discover how cocoa beans have been cultivated and enjoyed for centuries. Learn th steps of transforming raw cocoa bean into cocoa mass, cocoa butter and cocoa powder. Sample in-house cocoa refreshments such as cocoa marble ball, cocoa popcorn, cocoa batang buruk, pure handmade chocolate and signature cocoa drink. If you are looking for some local products, the 'Hoko' product is ideal for your shopping alternatives.

TAWAU HILLS NATIONAL PARK

This is one of the two parks that you can find in this part of Sabah located approximately  24 KM from the town. The Tawau Hills National Park is perfect for nature lovers who want to learn more about the rainforest's flora and fauna, as well as witnessing the world's talent tropical trees. There are  lots of popular hill if you are a fan of trekking, then you can cool down at the waterfalls nearby. You will be able to find chalets, camping sites and places to do picnics at Tawau Hills National Park while you do some bird watching.

DANUM VALLEY

The Danum Valley conservation area has always been an interest for scientists doing research on the ecology system of tropical rainforest. It support close to 300 species of birds (most of which are endemic to Borneo) and more than 100 species of mammals. While the African safari has its Big Five, Danum Valley is famous for sightings of extremely rare creatures such as Sumatran rhinos, clouded leopards, pygmy elephants, gibbons and if you are really lucky, the sun bear. While you're here, do not miss out on the night drive as it gives you a completely different feel of the rainforest after dark. Keep an eye out for the nocturnal creatures - giant flying squirrel, sambar deer, civets and leopard cat.
